CITY OF PIEVE
Città della Pieve has a medieval historic center nestled on a hill 508 m above sea level, overlooking the Val di Chiana. It is built in brick, the local handmade terracotta, with a characteristic color that varies from light pink to a darker shade and which is still produced today in accordance with tradition. Already in 1250 the town took on its current urban layout in the shape of an eagle, symbol of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, who advances threateningly towards Rome.
WHAT TO SEE
Come and discover the beauty of this small Umbrian village, home of one of the most important painters of the Italian Renaissance: Pietro Vannucci, known as “Il Perugino”, Raphael’s teacher.
A charming medieval town, nestled on a plateau-shaped hill between the Nestore and Chiani rivers, Città della Pieve dominates the Valdichiana and Lake Trasimeno.
Protected by the civic tower and surrounded by the red walls erected at the beginning of the 12th century to protect against enemies, there are numerous civil and religious buildings. The oldest is certainly the Rocca: a beautiful example of medieval architecture commissioned by the city of Perugia in the mid-1300s when it conquered Città della Pieve.
